Bus Trip to Winterthur and the Nemours Mansion
May 20, 2010 at 7:45 AM
On Thursday, May 20, the HSDC Bus Trip will take participants to the Brandywine Valley near Wilmington, Delaware. We will leave at 7:45 AM from the Weis Markets parking lot at 1195 Lowther Road, Camp Hill, and will return approximately 6:00 PM.
The first stop will be Winterthur, an American estate in the spirit of 18th and 19th century European country houses, formerly the home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969), world-renowned collector of American antiques and an avid horticulturist. Our tour will include highlights of his exquisite collections, which include thousands of decorative pieces and, in some instances, whole rooms from historic homes.
A tram ride into the incomparable gardens of the estate will showcase the very special spring plantings from around the world. Of course, you'll visit the wonderful museum stores, too.
Luncheon will be served at the gracious du Pont Country Club, where lush landscape, comfortable atmosphere and scrumptious cuisine combine for a delightful experience.
Following lunch, we continue on to Nemours Mansion and Gardens. The glories of this 100-room French chateau, formerly belonging to Alfred I. du Pont, are a feast for the eyes. Nemours is furnished with fine period antiques, rare oriental rugs and tapestries. The 300-acre gardens include a working carillon tower, and the Chauffeur's Garage holds a collection of the family's antique autos.
The cost of the trip, including lunch, is $108.00 for members and $120.00 for non-members. Non-members may take advantage of a special offer of an annual HSDC membership and this bus trip at the member price for $130.00 - a savings of $8.00 HSDC members receive a 10% discount on gift shop purchases and bus trips as well as a free tour of the John Harris - Simon Cameron Mansion and a copy of our annual publication, The Susquehanna Journal.
To register or for more details, please call or email HSDC.
